Happy new week!
This week, we look at a faith that is more than words—faith that lives, breathes, and acts. The kind that clings to Jesus, flows in obedience, and bears fruit that lasts. The kind James and Paul both speak of: saving faith.
Scripture
“So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”
— James 2:17 (ESV)
Observation
James doesn’t contradict Paul—he completes the picture. Paul teaches clearly that we are saved by grace through faith, not works (Ephesians 2:8–9). But he also reminds us that we are created in Christ Jesus for good works (Ephesians 2:10).
James challenges us to consider the quality of our faith. Dead faith is the kind that speaks—but never moves. It says, “Be warmed and filled,” but does nothing (James 2:16). Living faith looks like action. It flows from trust in Christ and leads to obedience to Christ.
Titus 3:8 tells us that: “those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works.” This means that these works don’t earn salvation. They reveal it. They are the natural result of a heart that’s been made new.
Application
So what does living, saving faith look like?
It looks to Jesus—not self (Hebrews 12:2)
It agrees with God’s Word, in season and out (2 Timothy 4:2)
It does not demand a reward—it trusts the Giver (Luke 17:10)
It is grounded in Christ’s death and resurrection (Romans 4:24–25)
It is expressed through repentance and good works (Acts 26:20, Titus 2:14)
It may struggle with doubt—but doubt doesn’t win (Mark 9:24)
It longs for others to come to faith too (2 Corinthians 5:20)
Faith is being fully convinced that what we believe is real, true, and reliable—and the object of our faith is the person and works of Jesus Christ.
As Titus 3:8 says again, “those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works.”
Our works don’t save us. But our works reveal whether we’ve truly believed.
Faith that saves is faith that follows.
It is rooted in the cross and revealed in our lives.
Let your faith live—and let it lead others to Life.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You that I am saved by grace through faith in You alone. Forgive me for the times I’ve had belief without obedience, profession without fruit. Help me to walk in true, living faith—a faith that responds, obeys, and bears fruit in every good work. I want to be known not just by what I say, but by how I follow You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
